What is Verizon?

 

Verizon Communications Inc. is an American broadband and telecommunications company and a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

 

Parent company was formed in 1983 as part of the 1984 AT&T breakup into seven Baby Bells. It was called Bell Atlantic.

 

Prior to its transformation into Verizon, Bell Atlantic had merged with another Regional Bell Operating Company, NYNEX, in 1997. It later merged with GTE another regional telecommunications giant.

 

The name is a portmanteau of veritas and horizon, and its pronunciation rhymes with horizon. The company’s headquarters are located in Basking Ridge New Jersey.

 

Verizon has evolved into a Telecommunications Giant by acquiring regional competitors and trimming excess fat, usually unsuccessful business units mainly in Rural areas of the United States.

 

It is a true Broadband company providing Landline phone service, wireless Phone Service, Internet Service and lately Television service.

 

 

Its was the First company in the US to provide Fiber to the Premises (FTTP) en-mass. This enabled Verizon to enter the Lucrative Television business with it Fiber Services code names Fios.

What is FTTP? FTTP is short for Fiber To The Premises. See loong long time ago in a far away galaxy, some smelly old men sat down in a room filled with smoke and decided time had come for the ordinary man to experience the power of broadband. This service would be delivered over Fiber to the common mans home. The ugliest one of them all jumped up and said, wait a minute. That is Fiber to the Premises! In the opposite corner, the handsome guy turned to him and calmly said, No, I believe that is FTTP.
